Navy Victory Like Japan Did America should celebrate the anniversary of the heroic victory at Midway, but realize the next Pacific war won’t be so easy. June 2, , An inferior American force steamed into battle and won big, preparing the way for ultimate victory. But make no mistake: Navy was both fortunate in its Japanese foe during World War II and the beneficiary of farsighted political leadership at home. Neither condition holds today. If America were to be involved in a major naval battle in the Pacific today, it would likely be with a decaying fleet, against a more evenly matched opponent such as China, and the result could easily turn out differently.
Midway thus represents a warning as well as a cause for celebration.

Jobs Lesbian sailor in a civil union fights fraternization charge Chief petty officer will face court-martial over relationship with fellow servicewoman of lower rank at Great Lakes base April 01, By Lisa Black, Chicago Tribune reporter Chief Petty Officer Sabrina Russell, left, and Petty Officer 1st Class Jodi Geibel believe they have been targeted by other enlisted sailors who blamed them for reporting unrelated claims of sexual harassment, according to a lawyer representing Russell.
Russell faces trial by court-martial on fraternization charges. Chief Petty Officer Sabrina Russell, 31, who was joined with her partner in a legal civil union last year, was charged last month with violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice “by wrongfully engaging in an unduly familiar personal relationship that did not respect differences in rank and grade,” according to the Navy’s charge sheet.
Her lawyer claims she is being discriminated against because of her same-sex partnership, despite the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law that formerly prohibited gays from openly serving in the military. They have a provision for that,” he said. Under Navy code, senior enlisted personnel are not allowed to get romantically involved with junior personnel in the same command, regardless of sexual preference, a military spokesman said.
The charge against Russell comes at a time when the military has made large strides in gay tolerance and acceptance, but still hasn’t reached equality in its approach to same-sex couples, advocates say. In February, then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta extended some benefits to same-sex domestic partners of military service members but stopped short of providing health and housing benefits because of restrictions under the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
Supreme Court heard arguments on the federal act last week, as well as California’s Proposition 8, the state’s law banning same-sex marriage.

Its entry into the war resulted in part of an attack of a German submersible: The torpedoing of the Lusitania. Lexington class battlecruisers- Original design, configuration. When the war ended in November , it had added to an already impressive navy, many new ships. This vision of naval power has been largely carried out by President Theodore Roosevelt, with thinkers like Alfred Thayer Mahan and competent, active secretaries of state. The general quality of the US Navy was only handicapped by the great use of dreadnoughts and pre-dreadnoughts, to the detriment of modern cruisers which were sorely lacking.
This was embodied in the Washington Treaty, which decreed a ten-year moratorium and severe tonnage limitations for several classes of ships, starting with costly battleships. This left the Admiralty to rest on its copious existing dreadnoughts force, complete the fleet with modern cruisers and submarines, and launch aircraft carriers, provided the treaty left this category free.

Veterans’ advocacy groups say many veterans’ families have no idea the money is there. Lastowka said the amount is dependent on the premium that the solider chose to pay in the original policy. About 25 million people have enrolled in the insurance programs since World War I, according to Lastowka. The bulk of the unclaimed funds date from World War II, when about 22 million people enrolled. He urged veterans’ families to check if they are eligible through the Veterans Affairs website: Family members should have a veteran’s name, date of birth, death and, if possible, the insurance policy number.
Lastowka said the website, which the department launched seven years ago, is the fastest method to determine if a family member is eligible for a payment. There is also a toll-free phone number

Scammers are increasingly creating fake profiles on social media and dating websites, pretending to be Soldiers. Army Criminal Investigation Command are once again warning the American public, as well as citizens from other nations, to be extra vigilant and not to fall prey to Internet scams or impersonation fraud — especially scams that promise true love, but only end up breaking hearts and bank accounts.
CID continues to receive hundreds of reports of various scams involving persons pretending to be U. The victims are most often unsuspecting women, 30 to 55 years old, who think they are romantically involved on the Internet with an American Soldier, when in fact they are being cyber-robbed by perpetrators thousands of miles away. The criminals are pretending to be U. The perpetrators will often take the true rank and name of a U.
Soldier who is honorably serving his country somewhere in the world, marry that up with some photographs of a Soldier off the Internet, and then build a false identity to begin prowling the Internet for victims. The scams often involve carefully worded romantic requests for money from the victim to purchase special laptop computers, international telephones, military leave papers, and transportation fees to be used by the fictitious “deployed Soldier” so their false relationship can continue.
The scams include asking the victim to send money, often thousands of dollars at a time, to a third party address. Once victims are hooked, the criminals continue their ruse. These scams are outright theft and are a grave misrepresentation of the U. Army and the tremendous amount of support programs and mechanisms that exist for Soldiers today, especially those serving overseas, said Grey. Army CID is warning people once again to be very suspicious if they begin a relationship on the Internet with someone claiming to be an American Soldier and within a matter of weeks, the alleged Soldier is asking for money, as well as their hand in marriage.
But the laws of the heart sometimes overwhelm the instinct for self-preservation. During each deployment aboard this nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, as with dozens of other naval ships with female crew members, there are regular instances of pregnancy and prohibited relationships among shipmates. Since the Lincoln pulled out of its home port in Everett, Wash.
The Navy’s policies on fraternization are contained in OPNAV Instruction B, Navy Fraternization Policy. Policy. Dating, shared living The prohibitions listed in this policy are based on this unique leadership responsibility.
If he doesn’t get it, we hear on the radio: It’s a tricky transition. Clear deck The opposite of ” fouled deck “. It means the carrier’s flight deck is ready to receive the next aircraft. In ” cyclic ” landing operations the “clear deck” light may come just seconds before the next landing. The idea is that if the aircraft experiences a problem requiring it to ditch , it won’t get run over by the ship.
Clearing turns were evidently thought up by the brass , since they make little sense: If an aircraft is in danger of going in the drink , executing a turn loses lift and will exacerbate its condition and make it more likely it’ll ditch. No way is a pilot in extremis to stay airborne going to do a clearing turn. Let the Captain turn the ship! As a result, clearing turns are made by all the aircraft that are not in any danger of going in the drink. It’s a nice custom anyway.
Sort of a polite wave back at the Captain. But it had the Volkswagen kind of ugliness:
